About RV Air Lab
RV Air Lab is an independent testing site focused on one mission: finding the best RV air conditioners on the market. From standard rooftop units to battery-powered portables and modern mini-splits — if it keeps an RV cool when it’s 105°F outside, we test it.
We started this site for a simple reason: almost every “best RV air conditioner” article online is written by people who have never set foot inside a motorhome. They copy and paste specs from Amazon, publish fake ratings, and call it a review.
We got tired of wasting money on gear that couldn’t survive a single summer in the Mojave Desert. So, we decided to do the testing ourselves.
Who We Are
We aren’t HVAC engineers in white lab coats, and we don’t pretend to be. We are full-time RVers with over a decade of real-world road experience. We know what it feels like when your AC compressor fails in the middle of a heatwave, and we know how critical power consumption is when you are boondocking on solar.
“RV Air Lab” represents our approach: rigorous, data-driven, and objective. Every AC unit reviewed here is a unit we have personally installed, operated, and measured.
How We Actually Test
To give you advice you can trust, we follow a strict testing protocol:
- We Buy Our Own Gear: We purchase the units with our own money. We never accept free “review samples” from manufacturers.
- Real-World Conditions: We test in real RVs across extreme climates (like the Arizona desert), not in climate-controlled indoor facilities.
- Hard Data Over Hype: We use decibel meters to test noise levels, clamp meters to measure actual amp draw, and digital thermometers to verify the real BTU cooling drop.
- The Brutal Truth: If a highly-rated AC unit fails our 90-day road test, we will explicitly tell you not to buy it—even if it costs us a potential sale.
